We decided to raise five turkeys from chicks this year. All five made it to adolescence, when it was time to move them from the warm garage to the pasture outside. However, one of them quickly decided to “fly the coop.” And escaped into the forest. After an unsuccessful search, we hoped he would just come home to be with his friends. He never did.
That left us with the four we have today. Two of which will be harvested tomorrow – one for Thanksgiving and the other for multiple dinners throughout the year.
The other two are smaller heritage breeds that we will house over the winter to allow for another 6 months of growth before harvest.
