Well, today was butcher day for our chickens. We took all 50 of them in to a local place that does poultry processing. While it costs us a bit more, we feel it is money well spent. Chicken slaughter is messy and time consuming, with the feathers, etc. This place is USDA certified and has all the proper equipment to make it sanitary and quick.
This morning, our “crew” woke up before 6am to load the birds up in the cages and take them in. I must say that I was proud of the kids, who showed their true farmer-within as they willingly got up early to help with the chore of catching and carrying the chickens to the truck. Made me realize how much we all have changed over the past four years as “farmers.”
